Peter the Great St. Researchers from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) have developed Russian software for a metal 3D printer.

Oleg Panchenko, head of the SPbPU Laboratory of Light Materials and Structures, from its creators, said that this is the first domestic development of this kind. The expert noted that there is only one foreign development currently on the market, and it is not even exactly software.

In order to print even a single layer of a small product in a 3D printer, 1.5 thousand points must be programmed. The researcher says the finished product can consist of hundreds or thousands of layers, and “manual” programming takes too long. Panchenko emphasized that the software will do the same at all layers in a matter of minutes.

According to him, Russian universities and large industrial companies, including Rostec and Rosatom, were interested in development. The new software can be used in the aerospace industry, shipbuilding and metallurgy – in all these industries, such technologies will allow printing different products from different metals, depending on the needs of a particular enterprise.
