The US agency reported that the attackers manipulated photos and videos of both adults and minors into obscene content for publication on social networks and porn sites.
Such actions often aim to harass victims or extort money.
Typically, attackers threaten to distribute altered images or videos to friends or family members of the victim, demanding payments such as money or gift certificates. Or they ask you to send them real pictures or videos of a sexual nature.
Currently, there are many programs and cloud services that offer the creation of such scams. The creators of many of them claim to have protections that work, such as built-in verification features to detect “inappropriate content.” However, these measures are not effective enough in practice.
