Scientists evaluated the amount of muscle fat in 1634 adults aged 69-79 years. Between ages 1 and 6, an increase in body fat was associated with faster cognitive decline over time. The results were the same for both white and black men and women.

The findings show that muscle obesity plays a unique role in cognitive decline. And this type of obesity is different from other types of fat or other muscle characteristics. This was noted by Caterina Rosano, MPH, MD, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health.
