The purpose of such actions is to combat espionage in favor of the PRC. The government sent a corresponding order to all departmental departments. The current regulation is the second step following the ban on camera installation of these manufacturers and others, subject to the China National Intelligence Law, which obliges organizations to “support, assist and cooperate” with Chinese state intelligence.
The government’s actions are based, among other things, on a study by Commissioner Fraser Sampson for biometrics and security cameras; this means that at least a third of police stations in England and Wales use security cameras manufactured by the Chinese brand Hikvision.
“These new measures will protect our sensitive sectors from companies that could threaten national security and provide a powerful deterrent against hostile actors seeking to harm the UK,” said Cabinet Secretary-General Treasurer Jeremy Quinn.
