Experts said that preparations containing bempedoic acid have a cholesterol-lowering effect. And therefore, their risk of developing cardiovascular diseases is reduced.
The study, organized by the Cleveland Clinic, involved nearly 14,000 volunteers with statin intolerance. There was an average of 21% reduction in LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) levels as a result of the participants taking drugs containing bempedoic acid. And a 13% reduction in the risk of dangerous cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, stroke, and surgery to open blocked blood vessels to the heart.
“The study showed that bempedoic acid can be a valuable substitute for patients who cannot tolerate adequate doses of statins or who need further reductions in LDL cholesterol levels,” the researchers said.
