As a result, the companies began launching their own brands: Lestate, a sports shoe and clothing distributor, will create the Rank brand, and Sportmaster plans to launch a line of products under the Athlex brand, Kommersant learned.

For Russians, the brand has ceased to play an important role, and competition in this segment of sporting goods is still quite high, said Marina Malakhatko, Senior Director of CORE.XP.

The B1 study (the former Russian division of E&Y) mentioned the fact that buyers in Russia began to switch more frequently to lesser-known but affordable brands, especially in the sportswear segment.

For the development of private label sports clothing and footwear, the manufacturing capacity and quality of materials, seasonality and the change of collection at a given time are important. Among the difficulties are the limited amount of equipment and personnel, the lack of production in Russia of the necessary fabrics and accessories, experts say.

  • By May 2023, only 6% of business representatives have resolved the issue of import substitution, a study by the Internet Initiatives Development Fund showed. Even basic import substitution tasks remain unresolved and the market is simply not ready to abandon foreign solutions.
