Summer in Russia is the time of the appearance of juicy and fragrant melons. But do not rush to buy it to avoid stomach problems or even food poisoning. Gastroenterologist Ekaterina Kashukh of the Hemotest Laboratory explains that unripe melons can be tasteless and even harmful. The ripe melon season in Russia begins later – in late July or early August and continues until September. If you buy fruit earlier, there is a risk of unripe fruit that can cause indigestion and poisoning.

However, even a ripe melon can be dangerous if not grown or stored properly. Ekaterina Kashukh advises to buy melons in supermarkets and department stores, where the quality of the products is checked and the storage conditions are observed. In such places the fruits also have relevant documents that can be checked. Small outlets such as warehouses or cars often pose a greater risk to health and melon storage as they do not comply.

To choose a good melon in the store, you need to pay attention to various signs that distinguish a ripe fruit from an unripe or overripe fruit. First, pay attention to the aroma – in an unripe melon it will almost never be. A ripe melon should have a firm but not too hard rind – it should flex slightly when pressed. If the melon is too firm, it’s probably not ripe yet.

So, following the advice of Ekaterina Kashukh, you can choose a quality melon in the store. And remember that choosing the right melon will provide you with delicious and safe enjoyment during the hot summer months.
