Initially, beeps were needed during a call to make it clear to the phone user that the station was ready to accept the number. And it works when using a public switched telephone network (PSTN).
Cellular communication that does not use PSTN does not beep. Immediately after dialing the number, our mobile phones connect to it and forward the call. A smartphone can simulate a dial tone to make us feel comfortable, but it doesn’t work like a landline phone.
In December 2025, the local public telephone network in the UK will be shut down. Instead, only the internet system will remain. And then the beeps will become redundant, so they can be removed.
