Facebook could ‘compete’ Google and Apple app stores in Europe. Meta, the company that owns the social network, is considering creating an ad category that will allow direct downloads of apps.
According to Alex Heath, columnist Border, big tech plans to take advantage of Digital Markets Act (DMA) of the European Union. The regulation, which will take effect in 2024, requires Apple and Google to allow software from third-party sources to be installed on their mobile systems.
Meta should start testing new Facebook ad format with direct app downloads in 2023. According to the source, a large group of Android developers is involved in the project.
Big tech suggests conversions will be higher by making apps available by advertising on the social network. The company will also not charge additional fees for transactions within the software allowing the use of different billing systems.
Compared to Apple’s iOS, it seems like a safe choice for Meta to start testing the new ad category with Android apps. Despite Google’s efforts to block the app, the mobile system already allows third-party fonts to be loaded (sideloaded).
“We’ve always been interested in helping developers distribute their apps, and new options will increase competition in this space. Professionals deserve more ways to get apps to people easily,” Meta spokesperson Tom Channick told The Verge.
Microsoft can also get into the dispute
In addition to the target, Microsoft must also face the “duo” of Apple and Google. Guided by the DMA recommended opening, the owner of Windows plans to launch A game app store for iOS and Android in Europe in 2024
Phill Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, has announced plans to bring Xbox content to more users. In addition, the brand wants to help create a “scenario where devices are open to applications from different trusted sources.”
