Google this Wednesday (12) released NotebookLM, an experimental project from Google Labs. It is an artificial intelligence (AI) notebook designed to “help people learn faster.” Introduced at this year’s I/O, the tool was previously called Project Tailwind.
NotebookLM promises to use the power of “language models paired with your existing content to gain critical insights faster.” Something like a virtual research assistant. Can summarize facts, explain ideas, and discuss connections.
Still, according to big tech, the new assistant is different from traditional chatbots. bases its language model only on uploaded notes and fonts. After selecting the desired Google Docs file, there are three possibilities of use.
NotebookLM automatically generates a summary after the item is added. The user can then ask questions about the document or even make requests such as “create a glossary of key terms” and submit research notes. It is also possible to generate ideas from the most objective to the most creative..
However, it’s worth a caveat: Although different from other programs like ChatGPT, NotebookLM can hallucinate. It is important to check the answers given by the AI in the source material.
Raiza Martins, Product Manager at Google Labs, and Steven Johnson, Editor-in-Chief, said, “When you rely on multiple sources, we make it easier to control this situation by accompanying each response with citations and showing you the most relevant original citations from your sources.”
Initially, NotebookLM was only available to a small group of US users. According to Google, the tool continues to be refined to become more useful.
