A return to the 5G smartphone market could spell a victory for a company that has been talking about being in “survival” mode for nearly three years.
The tech giant had once rivaled Apple and Samsung for the title of the world’s largest phone maker, until the US imposed a series of sanctions in 2019 that limited access to the chips needed to produce the most advanced models. The US and European governments have labeled Huawei a security threat, which the company denies. Since then, Huawei has sold a limited number of 5G models that use a replacement chip.
Huawei declined to comment to Reuters. SMIC did not respond to the same request.
