Ivan Makhotkin, chief scientist at the All-Russian Mineral Resources Institute, lead researcher at the Institute of Mineral Deposits of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that with a given wind direction, ash from the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano could cover Reykjavik. .

The volcano, which started to erupt on the evening of July 10, is located 30 kilometers from the capital of Iceland. However, for now, the scientist stressed that this was a standard and relatively small eruption – ash was thrown two to three kilometers high – and there is no immediate threat to Reykjavik.

The volcanologist noted that the strength of the eruption will also depend on whether there is a lake near Fagradalsfjall. Makhotkin reminded that the ash emission that interrupted air traffic in Europe in 2010 was caused by water entering the mouth of Eyyafyatlayokudl volcano. Repeating the situation with Fagradalsfjall will result in a stronger explosion.
