Russian authorities are hesitant to nationalize Yandex because they fear a “brain drain” from the company, four people with knowledge of the company’s plans told Reuters.
The publication refers to the December statement by the head of the Ministry of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev that about 100 thousand IT specialists will leave Russia by 2022. The sources also believe that the outflow of qualified personnel may begin if Yandex is sold to one of the Russian state-owned companies.
In the fall, Yandex confirmed plans to restructure business management. Parent company Yandex NV will stand out as a separate group, and Russia’s Yandex should become part of a new parent structure.
But as the agency writes, negotiations on the division of Russian and international business have now been suspended.
Earlier, sources claimed that the main contenders for the acquisition of Russian assets were Lukoil co-owner Vagit Alekperov, Severstal owner Alexei Mordashov and Vladimir Potanin structures. VTB also joined the consortium to buy a stake in Yandex.
