The company’s first foray into the world of portable computing was the Portable Macintosh, released in 1989. Although the device was presented as a major innovation, it encountered a number of problems.
First, the laptop was too heavy. Its weight was approximately 7.3 kg, which is equivalent to the weight of five MacBook Airs. This made it difficult to transport, despite being “portable”.
Secondly, the innovative battery drained quickly, especially in backlit models.
But perhaps the biggest problem was the price: $6,500 to $7,000 would be $16,042 to $17,256 today, adjusted for inflation.
All these factors meant that the Macintosh Portable would not have the same success as the Apple desktop computers of the time.
