Patagonia/GORE-TEX

Since its introduction to the market in the 1970s, GORE-TEX has been the leading waterproof membrane in the industry, and as industry standards in green technology have evolved, it has shown a renewed commitment to staying ahead of the pack. Along with the new ePe membrane, made without PFC chemicals, GORE-TEX has begun producing laminate layers from 100% recycled plasticand this new breakthrough makes its debut on the latest Patagonia jacket.

The Patagonia Stormshadow Parka is one of the warmest jackets in the Patagonia line, made up of 700 fills, 100% recycled down, under a full GORE-TEX membrane and a PFC-free DWR finish. No wonder Patagonia was an early adopter and partnered with technological advances to ensure you not only get a great quality jacket, but one that doesn’t break the bank. Here’s how the latest ecotech advances from GORE-TEX and Patagonia keep you dry.

GORE-TEX ePE membrane

GORE-TEX Products first introduced the new ePe membrane in 2022, but you’ll forgive the lack of it. While many companies embraced the latest technology, the list of GORE-TEX jackets, gloves, hiking boots, and other ePE garments was limited. As the rollout continues and products like the Stormshadow Parka bring this technology to everyday jackets, we expect to see more products with an ePE membrane.

Recycled GORE-TEX BIONIC textile

Along with all of this, GORE-TEX has taken the initiative to make its polyester facial wipes from 100% recycled plastic. To do this, the company has teamed up with BIONIC, a grassroots program in Costa Rica that focuses on local waste management and the reuse of plastic waste. GORE-TEX provided the materials and investments for this program, but they have gone further and now use the collected plastic as part of the lamination process.

The 100% recycled textile, first seen on the Patagonia Stormshadow jacket, is made from 50% plastic collected through BIONIC initiatives in coastal communities and 50% recycled municipal collections. Combined with an ePe membrane, you get the same quality waterproofing as a GORE-TEX jacket, but knowing you’re part of a sustainable outdoor technology revolution led by companies like Patagonia and GORE-TEX to keep outdoor spaces open. which we are so passionate about research.
