Most of us are familiar with Wikipedia’s regular requests for donations, which often seem urgent. However, an analysis of the company’s finances based on publicly available sources shows that its financial situation is far from critical.

Wikipedia’s main financial institution is the Wikimedia Foundation. According to the most recent data, the Wikimedia Foundation receives around $164 million in donations per year. But Wikipedia’s server maintenance costs in 2021 were only $2.4 million.

It was also revealed that a significant portion of the donations made to support the platform were for political purposes.

For example, the Wikimedia Foundation created a $4.5 million “Knowledge Fund” to provide grants to external organizations that promote information equality.

For this reason, Wikipedia does not experience financial difficulties despite requests for donations. On the contrary, it actively invests in various projects, including those of a political nature.
