The head of Roskosmos announced the official reason for the accident of Luna-25: the engine did not turn off on time, since it worked for 127 seconds instead of the prescribed 84 seconds. The spacecraft collided with the Moon and crashed on August 19 in what may have been Russia’s first mission to the Moon in 47 years.
Yury Borisov, general director of the state corporation Roscosmos, called the failure of the engine the cause of the collapse of the Luna-25 automatic station. His words are reported by RBC.
According to Borisov, the engine was supposed to run for 84 seconds and then shut down, but instead it ran for 127 seconds. As a result of the failure, Luna-25 collided with the surface of the Moon and crashed. The accident occurred on August 19.
The spacecraft was successfully launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on August 11. On the way to its destination, the station managed to take a picture of the “dark” side of the Moon and send it back to Earth.
The success of Luna 25 could be Russia’s first mission to the Moon in 47 years.
