The Japanese clothing chain Uniqlo finally refused to rent stores in Russia. These areas are occupied by other retailers. The retailer itself has completed its activities in the country, Vedomosti learned.

Japanese brand Uniqlo completes business in Russia

In May, the director of CORE.XP’s retail department, Marina Malakhatko, announced that the company would close most of the country’s stores. Until the spring of 2022, 50 outlets under the Japanese brand operated in Russia. Subsequently, Uniqlo decided to close a significant part of its stores in Russia until February 1, leaving no more than five outlets.

Large foreign clothing chains suspended their activities in Russia in early March due to the start of a Russian special operation in Ukraine. Among the brands that have left are Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Zara, Massimo Dutti and others.

In the fall of 2022, the malls filed lawsuits against foreign retail companies, including Uniqlo. The mall’s owners wanted to fine the brands for “lack of business and losses due to non-payment of rent.”
