Ozharovsky stressed that he was not aware of confirmed cases of the use of this type of ammunition by both Russia and Ukraine. He noted that if there had been isolated cases, the concentration of depleted uranium in the soil would have been relatively low. However, in the case of mass use, for example, in the case of shelling armored columns, a significant amount of contamination can occur.
Ozharovsky added that this type of pollution primarily causes cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). He explained that the effects depend on the mode of exposure, for example inhaling the substance can lead to lung damage.
The expert also emphasized that internal influence is much more dangerous than external influence. He gave an example of a secondary impact through food consumption, where the area of conflict could become farmland, which could lead to contamination of the food supply chain.
