The rocket was supposed to send the secret spacecraft NROL-107 Silent Barker into low Earth orbit. The task of this device was to monitor the activities of other space objects in fixed orbit.
United Launch Alliance (ULA), the company responsible for the launch, attributed the cancellation to “personnel safety and critical payload considerations” as well as the upcoming Tropical Storm Idalia.
This launch will be the 98th in Atlas V history and the last in the interests of the US National Reconnaissance Agency.
The event aroused interest as the final launch of the Antares medium rocket powered by Russian RD-181 engines was considered the end of the era of cooperation in space between Russia and the USA.
The cancellation of the Atlas V launch could increase tensions between the two countries in this area.
