Age is one of the indicators of cognitive health, that is, brain health. It is quite possible to improve the state of the brain with the help of physical exercises. Brain activation patterns in well-educated older adults are similar to those seen in younger adults who perform complex mental tasks.
A total of 52 people participated in the research. During the experiment, they performed tasks involving various types of cognitive control.
The results of the study showed that a lifestyle that includes moderate to vigorous physical activity helps maintain brain health in older people. Especially activity in their prefrontal cortex. High-intensity exercise refers to the level of physical activity that increases heart rate and lung capacity.
The study included not only the elderly (mean age 73 years), but also young people (mean age 26 years). Researchers found that higher cardiorespiratory performance compensated for cognitive decline with age in older adults who exercised regularly.
