Coffee classification expert Yu Shimada noticed that although the beans looked the same, the brewed coffee was less aromatic and tasted flatter than before. This decrease in quality encourages the growth of coffee leaves because Colombian farmers use less fertilizer.

This caused an increase in coffee bean prices, which also affected consumers in Japan. Store chains and cafes increased their prices to maintain the quality of coffee. Some farmers are exploring alternative methods to enhance flavor, such as adding orange peel or post-harvest yeast.
