I’ve been using the iPhone 14 Pro for a year now. Whatever happened to it, but there are factors why I once again decided to switch to a new model.
I’m lukewarm about the iPhone 15 Pro Max version, as I don’t like smartphones that are too big. It has always been believed that a smartphone should be for one hand, and ordinary firmware can cope with this device. And even its appearance in the form of a 5x optical zoom will not change my mind.
I think someone with me can make a difference about upgrading to the 15 Pro, but most current gen owners don’t have much permission to upgrade – that’s a fact.
Every year I convince myself that there are no objective reasons why I should change my smartphone to a neighboring generation; in its current form, everything is fine. However, why did I decide to do this then? Let’s move on to the reasons. Spoiler: Apple was able to change me again, and it’s not a mental disorder.
Reason #1. Titanium instead of steel
One of the important reasons why I want to upgrade now.

What plays a role here is not so much increased strength as reduced weight. The current iPhone 14 Pro is too relatively light, but with prolonged use I’m starting to notice my hand getting tired.
The new “proshka” weighs 187 grams versus 206 grams. The difference of almost 30 grams does not seem very significant, but in fact it plays a decisive role in the daily use of the device. And since I practically never let go of my iPhone, this is one of the extreme factors.
Well, yes, titanium is stronger than steel. It can withstand pressure 5 times greater than the last one. For example, this can happen if for some reason the smartphone falls out of your hands. Of course, it doesn’t protect the glass on the back panel, but at least the sides looked even more reliable.
And in general titanium practically not scratched.
It is clear that in the case of an iPhone, vacuum deposition takes place, and this layer can be torn off, so scratches will still appear, but they will most likely be less noticeable in the Natural Titanium case color. This particular color is relatively new in the modern world of iPhones, so it’s doubly interesting to look at it live.
Reason #2. The long-awaited USB-C instead of Lightning
I’ll be honest: I’m lukewarm about the USB-C standard itself. “Lightning”, unlike “boobs”, at least does not become clogged with dust and other debris.
In the case of USB-C, periodically clean not only the charging port, but also the connector itself. The Lightning didn’t have that problem.
But this also reveals the advantages of the new standard, to which the EU authorities have led Apple in the traditional way.
it’s versatility. I have a lot of different non-Apple equipment that charges using a USB-C cable. And there are plenty of Android device owners among our friends. There will no longer be the classic joke about people asking others, “Who has an iPhone cord?” That era is gone, and Apple knows it very well.
Millions of users from all over the world have long needed help from the company by switching to Type-C. And even when Lightning was first introduced, the Cupertino team said it would be around for the next decade. And so it happened. It’s time to give space to new technologies in iPhones.
It’s just a shame that with the advent of USB-C in iPhones, the charging speed is hasn’t changed. The new ones still have a power of up to 27 W, like my iPhone 14 Pro. Perhaps this point will be corrected with software updates or in new iPhones, but for now it’s quite normal. This is better than my 120 W and 10 minutes from the outlet, but with a battery that dies after six months.
Reason #3. Top gaming features. Even Death Stranding starts
I occasionally use my iPhone for gaming. I am an avid gamer myself and I often write to you here about some new products.
After the announcement of a major AAA game for the iPhone 15 Pro at the presentation on September 12, I just… jaw dropped. And among them there are not only old titles like Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village, but also one of the main new products of 2023 – Assassins’ Creed Mirage. Of course, I am “sick to the bone” and buy the game on both the PlayStation 5 and iPhone 15 Pro. There will be a comparison review with this platform, wait for it.

It would seem that the iPhone 14 Pro was deprived, because the Apple A17 Pro is only 10% more powerful than the A16. But the main innovation lies precisely in the 20% increase in the schedule. This is a powerful leap forward, and not only thanks to the transition to the 3nm process technology, but also to the personal merits of the company’s engineers.
Plus, for the first time, hardware support for ray tracing was introduced here, as opposed to software support in the iPhone 14 Pro. Thus, this method of implementing the model will drag on even longer after release, and will be one less reason to update in the future.
Reason #4. New Action. New forms of interaction
Perhaps the most controversial innovation, which I really want to see in person. The iconic silent mode lever fades into the background and is abandoned. I always used it in the same format – turn on silent mode. That’s all. Further in this area I looked completely before purchasing a new iPhone.
New Action, which will replace the lever, should refresh the smartphone, albeit just a little. Hooray, we’ve brought back the Taptic Engine to simulate sensations, although we haven’t brought back 3D Touch… but at least that’s it. I’ve always liked this format.
On this button you can record several different actions:
• activation chamber
• turning on the flashlight
• launch a voice note
• opening a note
• mode switching is questionable
• start command
The format with teams can bring particular personal benefit to me. I use a VPN for various services, but sometimes it may not turn on, and there will be an additional option to turn it on permanently without having to switch to Settings.
As for the camera, I don’t really understand why this key is needed. You can also take pictures using the view rocker. And to open the camera, there are two functions directly with the screen lock: swipe and switch keys. Where else is the third one? Apple, come on.
The same goes for the flashlight, only for them the third action is discovery. Command centre instead of swiping.
It will be cool when they add a translator for this button to the new iOS. It may be useful when traveling abroad.
Reason #5. New battery
This factor also plays one of the most important roles for me. The battery on the iPhone 14 Pro is frankly bad.
Yes, it still complies with Apple’s requirements (otherwise, why isn’t there a warranty replacement?), but 86% of the remaining capacity in a year is not serious. I had the same bad experience only with the iPhone 11. And okay, if I were the only one, there were a lot of dissatisfied people.

Here you can say “renew the battery and that’s it.” But I don’t really want to change the “tough for soap”. I hope that the iPhone 15 Pro will have a better battery situation. Although the capacity remains almost unchanged depending on current generations, the battery itself may change, and it will not “die” as much as it does now. All that remains is to check it in practice.
How much money do I plan to take?
At the start of sales on September 22, unrealistically high prices for new iPhones are expected.
Among the first steps, breaking my head did not make any sense. Probably, in 2-4 weeks the cost will drop to my psychological minimum for the iPhone 15 Pro 128 GB (I’m counting on 120-130 thousand rubles, taking into account the current exchange rate). Then I will think about purchasing.
Brothers in the first wave of top models under 200 thousand (or even under 400 thousand), I don’t see any point, which I advise others not to do – just wait a little and get a smartphone for adequate money. Closer to the case, the situation will become clearer, and we will see.
