Although the group targeted thousands of companies, Microsoft said it only gained access to a small percentage of them. The attacks took place between February and July of this year and primarily affected American companies. While the attacks appear to have been carried out for espionage purposes, the US intelligence community warns that Iran has become increasingly aggressive in its cyber operations and could pose a greater threat in the future.
Their North Korean counterparts are not sleeping either. Google’s threat intelligence team has warned that North Korea-backed hackers have launched a new campaign targeting security researchers using zero-day exploits and malware.
