Scientists from the Baltic Federal University, together with colleagues from Bulgaria and Spain, with support from the Russian Science Foundation, have developed a new way to detect depression using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This method is called the “consensus approach” and allows you to identify differences between healthy people and patients suffering from depression.
Depression is a serious mental disorder characterized by long-term pessimism and loss of interest in life. However, it can be difficult to diagnose as there are no easy and accessible testing methods. Psychiatrists usually define depression based on clinical findings and conversation with the patient. A new MRI technique can now detect signs of depression more accurately.
Researchers analyzed MRI data from healthy people and patients with depression. The standard group analysis method was used first, followed by a new consensus approach. The second method allowed us to more effectively identify differences in the activity of neural connections between the two groups. This paves the way for the development of automated MRI-based depression diagnostic systems that could increase the accuracy and speed of diagnosis of this mental disorder.
