Users noticed that when installing the new Surface Laptop Studio 2, they were asked to play a modern version of the SkiFree game while waiting for updates to install.

It’s the same surfing game that Microsoft added to its Edge browser three years ago. It is very similar to SkiFree, which was released as part of Entertainment Pack 3 for Windows in 1991.

The game appears as an option if Windows updates are available or the user restores settings using Windows Backup.

It’s unclear whether this is limited to new Surface devices or whether Microsoft is adding the game to the Windows 11 installation process in general.

Note that such innovations make the operating system installation process less monotonous.
