The Prosecutor’s Office will verify the legality of the commission introduced by Wildberries for payment with Visa and Mastercard cards

The Russian online trading platform introduced new payment terms for orders on October 10. Wildberries now charges a 3% commission to users who pay with Visa and Mastercard. The innovation applies only to buyers from Russia.

Experts called this step questionable and suggested that the company is trying to pass on its own acquisition costs to buyers.

The market explained the introduction of the commission by the peculiarities of the operational and technological process of accepting payments.

“Currently, Wildberries does not have the ability to directly process transactions with Visa and Mastercard cards issued in Russia,” says the official market commentary.

In connection with the new payment terms, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov ordered to organize an audit of Wildberries shares. The Central Bank and Rospotrebnadzor will participate in the events.

“Special attention will be paid to the validity of the actions of the specified trading platform, respect for consumer rights and prevention of the use of illegal schemes to extract excess commercial income,” explained the press service of the agency in charge of enforce the law.
