Dozens of oil, gas and defense businesses in Eastern Europe have been targeted by hackers. Kaspersky Lab warned that these attackers are using sophisticated methods to spy on and steal data, including a hidden remote malware known as a backdoor.
The attack started with phishing emails, then hackers probed the companies’ networks, stealing information and gaining access to their systems. According to preliminary data, a Korean-speaking person may be behind the attack, but his identity cannot be determined with certainty.
Hackers used a variety of methods to hide their activities, such as vulnerable drives and file hiding. They also used a USB module to infiltrate isolated networks containing sensitive data.
