High-yield chemical explosives and radioisotope tracers were used in the experiment, which was carried out “to support the United States’ efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons”, aiming to reduce global nuclear threats.
The CTBT, signed in 1996, has not been ratified by some countries, including the United States, unlike Russia, which ratified it in 2000. But countries with nuclear weapons have voluntarily pledged to refrain from conducting such tests.
