The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) does not recognize Apple’s claims regarding the carbon neutrality of the Apple Watch, writes the Financial Times.

The Apple Watch Series release mentions the phrase “carbon neutral” 24 times. However, in the middle of the text it says that “the small amount of remaining environmental offsets comes from high-quality carbon credits from environmental projects.”

Simply put, the production of the Apple Watch Series 9 still used harmful emissions, but it is impossible to completely get rid of them, so the company is planting trees, thereby maximizing the compensation for environmental damage.

BEUC believes Apple’s carbon neutrality claims are inaccurate and misleading to consumers. Environmentalists added that the practice is ineffective because the carbon stored in trees is quickly released back into the atmosphere when the wood is processed into pulp, cardboard or toilet paper.

In addition, the EU prohibits companies from using the term “carbon neutral” if they, like Apple, try to offset harmful emissions. The ban will come into force in 2026. [Financial Times]
