The attention of the authorities was drawn to the Apple Watch advertisement, in which the device was called the first carbon-neutral device. Monique Goyens, President of the European Consumer Organization (BEUC), expressed the view that such statements are “scientifically inaccurate and misleading to consumers”.

The European Parliament and the European Council recently reached an agreement to ban “misleading advertising,” including ads in which companies talk about offsetting emissions.

Experts interviewed by the Financial Times said such ads could be an example of greenwashing if a company positions itself as environmentally friendly without sufficient evidence.

The agreement has not yet become law but is expected to be adopted in the near future.
