The study was dedicated to examining the role of the IL-6 virus in manipulating the human immune system. It has been found that HHV-8 can infect specific immune cells called monocytes, leading to increased macrophage production. These macrophages are less effective at activating the T cells needed to fight external pathogens and cancer cells.
Essentially, HHV-8 uses IL-6 to generate infected host cells and then impairs immune defenses by impairing macrophage function. Reprogramming of immune cells by the herpes virus increases inflammation in the body, leaving infected individuals vulnerable to secondary infections and cancer development.
