It took more than 10 months of research in the cafe to cats in the UK, seeing more than 53 cats and analyzing their every gesture, face and grimace. This prompted Dr. Brittany Florkiewicz, lead author from Lyon College in Arkansas, to identify more than 300 manifestations of this beloved and loathed animal.

They identified 126 friendly facial expressions, including a peaceful, closed-eye expression, that cat owners learned to recognize as a sign of love.

The cats showed 102 unfriendly facial expressions, such as constricted pupils and flattened ears, which felines also show to humans when they are upset.

On the other hand, there are 48 types of faces that are not easy to recognize and that do not carry a specific meaning.

Dr Brittany Florkiewicz commented: “These results show that it is useful to look at a cat’s ears, eyes and whiskers to see if it is feeling friendly. Their mouth provides a lot of information about the likelihood of a cat fight. “People may think that cats’ facial expressions are meant to warn other cats and people, but it shows how social and tolerant cats can be.”

The study, published in the journal Behavioral Processes, examined 276 types of facial expressions, cats in relation to other cats.

The study observed four muscle movements during a friendly facial expression: the eyes are closed, the ears are pulled together and pushed forward, and the whiskers are also facing forward.

Cats were found to have 26 unique facial movements that shape their facial expressions, compared to 27 for cats. dogs and 44 for people.
