This will be the first attempt to bring Mars images back to Earth. NASA does not want to lose leadership in this race, but after the American agency, China also set its sights on Mars with the Tianwen-3 project. And whoever gets there first will not be able to answer unequivocally.
But government funding for MSR has a problem: NASA must withdraw from the currently implemented European Mars program ExoMars 2022. The House of Representatives did not allocate a penny for this.
At the same time, NASA is not completely leaving the European project, as currently NASA’s Mars rover Perseverance is collecting and packaging two sets of nuclei in test tubes in the Jezero crater, after which the Martian samples will be loaded onto Mars. The Ascent Vehicle (MAV) rocket, which will carry them to orbit near Mars, will be picked up by the ERO (Earth Return Orbiter) apparatus developed by the European Space Agency (ESA).
