If your Mac is accessed by members, relatives, or co-workers, one of the vulnerabilities will be the web browser search. It stores passwords, browsing history and active sessions on sites.
On macOS, you can evaluate access to the Safari browser in various ways. Now let’s look at the most popular options.
1. Create multiple accounts on macOS
The easiest way is to create multiple accounts for different users. You can add a separate account for your wife or child, or you can make one general guest account that will be used by all other computer users.
Topic: How to maintain account rights on macOS. We create accounts for guests, wives and children
Accounts are configured as follows:
▶ Go to System Settings – Users and Groups.
▶ Press the button Add an account and enter the administrator password. (Only users with Administrator rights can manage other accounts.)
▶ Select the type of new entry, specify the name and user folder name.
▶ If necessary, think over a password and hint.
▶ Press the button Create a user and the new account will be added to the computer.
2. Use Safari’s private mode.
Use multiple accounts only to protect your browser tabs. Not everyone is ready, there is another way. Starting with iOS 17 and macOS, Sonoma developers have added a new feature to the standard Safari browser.
Option to open a tab opened in private mode. To access them you must log in using the unlock code or Touch ID.
▶ Launch Safari and settings in the browser.
▶ open tab Confidentiality.
▶ Activate the option Require a password to view protected tabs.
If other users are working on the computer, they will not be able to see the tabs from private mode.
3. Set up screen time.
There is a way to evaluate access to any application on a Mac. To do this, you need to set restrictions in your Screen Time settings. You will need a password to confirm your time in Safari and to access the browser system.
▶ Go to System Settings – Screen Time – Application and Website Geometry.
▶ Enable the option and additional section. Application limits.
▶ add a limit for Safari and set the time – 1 minute.
▶ Don’t forget to disable changing Screen Time settings (System Settings – Screen Time – Lock Screen Time Settings).
After saving the limit, the browser will work without blocking for 1 minute. You can get one more minute without a password. To further unblock the threat, enter the authoritarian code to turn off the screen for a while.
4. Use external apps
If none of the above protection methods suits you, use third-party applications.
▶ For browser Chromium There are extensions that automatically clear history or set a password when launched.
▶ Browser Fire Fox The package includes a password-protected application.
▶ AppCrypt utility (distributed by subscription) Allows you to password protect any application on macOS.
This way you can set up browser blocking in a way that suits you.
