The Russian payment system “Mir” has begun to operate throughout Venezuela, and is accepted by around 40% of points of sale.

The Mir payment system is operational throughout Venezuela

“Today the Mir platform allows payments to be made in 100% of the territory of Venezuela. About 36% of all payment points already accept Mir cards, almost 40%. Retail establishments have the capacity to accept such payments,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil Pinto (cited by Vedomosti).

On Margarita Island, payment for purchases with the Mir card is available at 100% of the points of sale, added Gil Pinto.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added that some Venezuelan banks have opened correspondent accounts with credit institutions that facilitate Russian-Venezuelan trade.

In mid-October, the launch of the Mir payment system in Venezuela was announced. It was later reported that more than 80 thousand terminals were in operation.

In 2023, the Bank of Russia planned to introduce Mir payment system cards in five or six new countries. Now you can also use Mir in Belarus, Abkhazia, Armenia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
