This exciting development follows the release of the first eight birds from Spix’s Macaw Release Project into their natural habitat in Brazil in June 2022. The project aims to create a self-sustaining population of this species in the wild.
After the last known wild blue parrot was pushed to the brink of extinction in 2000, private breeders, zoos and the Brazilian government made a concerted effort to revive the population. A released pair, a male and a female macaw, triumphantly hatched two chicks in a specially constructed nest high in a Caraibeira tree.
