Despite its similarity to aurors on Earth, the glow on Mars is caused by other processes. Although this event has been suspected for 40 years, the first observation was made by the Mars Express orbiter ten years ago, and in 2020, scientists observed it in visible light using the TGO mission in Mars’ daylight.
Now, for the first time, the flare has been detected at night by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, providing unexpected information and potential clues for future missions to Mars.
