These innovative displays, known as phosphorescent blue OLEDs or PHOLEDs, promise to significantly reduce power consumption compared to existing OLED displays.
The company currently uses subpixels with green and red phosphors, while blue diodes still work with fluorescent materials.
The new blue phosphor diodes provide an internal luminous efficiency of 100%, as opposed to the 25% typical for fluorescent materials.
It was initially assumed that blue PHOLED panels would be used in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 models in 2024. However, as reported by The Elec, development of these displays has been delayed and they are now only expected to arrive in 2025.
This means new, more energy-efficient OLED panels could appear in Samsung foldable phones within two years.
