VSU Professor of Biophysics and Biotechnology Marina Kholyavka emphasized that the new method is the result of research aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the fight against bacterial infections. Their use shows a significant improvement in biological activity, allowing faster and more effective destruction of bacterial films.

Particular attention was paid to the effect of the ficin-chitosan complex on dental plaque, and the results were encouraging. Marina Kholyavka stated that this discovery could be important for the development of effective oral hygiene products.

Work on the project was carried out for a year with grant support from the Russian Science Foundation. The production of ficin from figs and the extraction of chitosan from shellfish open prospects for the creation of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agents.
