It’s perhaps the most desperate attempt in history to get clicks on a video, and the punishment for its audacity has already been meted out: The Central District of California ruled against Trevor Daniel JacobYouTuber who deliberately crashed a plane for online views.

In May of this year, a 30-year-old man pleaded guilty to obstructing a federal investigation into the incident after filing a false report about the location of the wreckage and claiming that the crash was caused by engine failure.

He will have to spend six months behind bars in the county jail.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Jacob planned to intentionally eject from his plane and film himself landing with a parachute during a solo flight on November 24, 2021, which was reportedly headed to Mammoth Lakes, California.

After reporting to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on November 26, Jacob agreed to provide coordinates of the downed plane and video of the wreckage to NTSB investigators.

The YouTuber later said he didn’t know the location of the crash, even though he picked up the remains in a helicopter on Dec. 10 and dumped them in trash cans around the Lompoc Airport. On December 23, 2021, a video titled “I Crashed My Plane” was uploaded to his YouTube channel, showing footage documenting the crash and Jacob’s parachute descent, as part of a sponsorship deal promoting the company’s wallet.

The prosecution argued that “he likely committed this crime to gain attention on social media and news for himself and for financial gain” and stressed that “this type of ‘reckless’ behavior will not be tolerated.”
