McDonald’s has begun testing a new concept for a small-format cafe chain, the company said in a statement. Ten restaurants will open throughout the year under the CosMc’s brand, named after the 80s mascot.
The concept of CosMc’s, as Bloomberg points out, is similar to that of Starbucks. The menu will feature a variety of drinks, coffee, as well as donuts and sandwiches.
The first location will open in December in Chicago, and the remaining nine will open during 2024.
“CosMc’s is a small-format concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s, but with its own unique personality,” said McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski, commenting on the opening of the chain.
The name of the new brand is a reference to one of McDonald’s Maxots called CosMc, which appeared in McDonald’s advertising in the late 80s and early 90s. CosMc is an alien from outer space who really wants to try McDonald’s food.
