In the 1950s, Colombian priest Padre Gustavo Huertas collected what he believed to be leaves of the extinct plant Sphenophilum colombianum. But today researchers discovered the truth.

The fossils, initially thought to be plant leaves, turned out to be modified ribs and vertebrae that form the turtle shell. Named “Turtwig” after the Pokémon character, these ancient baby turtles are a rare find in the world of paleontology.

Although Padre Huertas misjudged the nature of his findings, this confusion opened a fascinating window into the diverse possibilities of Colombia’s prehistoric past.
