The relevant data was verified in response to a letter from US Senator Ron Wyden to the US Department of Justice.
Senator Wyden called on the Department of Justice to allow Apple and Google to inform their customers and the public about government requirements regarding push notification data.
He explained that push notifications go through a kind of digital post office operated by phone operating system providers.
This means Apple and Google could be secretly required by governments to hand over this information, giving them access to user interactions with certain apps, the full text of notifications, and some unencrypted content.
Apple said in a statement that the federal government prohibited them from sharing information about push notification data requests, but now that the method is publicly available, the company will begin notifying users about such requests.
Google also acknowledged the issue and stated its commitment to inform users of such requests. Google’s transparency report already documents government requests for user push notification data.
