From a nutritional perspective, plain water will be much healthier than any soda. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), regular soda is 93% water. Also, regular soda contains a lot of sugar: a small can of soda contains almost 9 teaspoons of sugar.

Diet Coke will not help this situation either. Studies have shown that diet soda drinkers eat more unhealthy foods throughout the day. Another study found that postmenopausal women who drank more than two diet sodas a day were 23% more likely to have a stroke and 29% more likely to develop heart disease. This was compared to those who rarely or never drank diet soda.

Additionally, some types of soda contain caffeine, which has a mild diuretic effect. But usually there is so little caffeine that this effect becomes negligible.

Of course, soda still has a certain moisturizing effect on the body. But it shouldn’t be the primary way to meet your fluid needs.

In general, almost any beverage will be healthier than soda. This applies to both regular and diet options.
