“Optimus Gen 2” now has a more refined look and moves 30% faster than when Tesla showed off Optimus Generation 1 in May.
The increased speed is made possible by a 22 lb (10 kg) weight reduction, improved human foot geometry, new articulated toe sections and various other technical improvements.
At the end of the video, we even see a skit in which Optimus performs dance moves reminiscent of the Tesla CEO’s occasional appearances at the automaker’s major launch events. Presumably, the quality of the robot’s movements will improve over time.
Musk announced Optimus in 2021, saying the robot would one day “eliminate dangerous, repetitive and boring tasks.” Tesla unveiled a prototype in September 2022 and introduced a major update earlier this year.
The latest video shows Optimus gaining better balance and body control, moving more naturally.
We also see him use his “new hands” that can safely handle delicate objects, in this case an egg.
Discussing the Optimus program in his presentation, Musk, a man who never hesitates to do great things, said: “Those who are discerning or who listen carefully will understand that in the long run Optimus will be worth more than the car business and will be worth more than full autonomous driving. “This is my firm belief.”
And while initial versions of Optimus may head to the factory, the CEO added that he could one day be used to run errands for his human owners, answering requests like, “Please go to the store and buy me the following products.”
