Regulatory agency NHTSA made this decision following an increasing number of complaints and accidents regarding Tesla vehicles.
The study examined the possibility of misuse of the Autopilot feature, which, despite its name, does not provide fully autonomous driving.
Musk’s company now needs to update the software on 2 million cars to prevent misuse of autopilot.
One of the basic requirements of the autopilot is that the driver regularly touches the steering wheel. But some owners ignored this requirement, trying to trick the system by, for example, applying weight to the steering wheel. This behavior created a safety risk on the road.
Note that this is Tesla’s second recall this year related to complaints about onboard systems.
Previously, the company had to fix software bugs that caused unpredictable behavior of electric vehicles. Regulators are also investigating more than 50 crashes involving Tesla, suspecting faulty automated systems.
