The sequel to the 2000 animated film Chicken Run was released on Netflix this week.

Many critics and viewers rightly consider this film to be a true masterpiece of animation. “Chicken Run” was distinguished by its “plasticine” graphics, good humor, interesting three-dimensional characters (despite the fact that they were chickens!) and a superbly developed plot.

And now, 23 years later, Aardman studio released a sequel. We have already looked at this magnificent plasticine creation and will hasten to share our knowledge.

Gorgeous graphics that will shock your eyes

What is the cartoon about?: After making money from escaping from Tweedy’s farm, the chickens settle on an island that seems like paradise to them. However, everything changes when young Molly (Bella Ramsey), daughter Ginger and Rocky go on an adventure and visit a new nugget factory where her parents must conduct a rescue mission.

First of all, it stands out from the mountainous, tasteless, same-type animation of recent years with its “plasticine” approach, distinguished by retro aesthetics and stop-motion animation.

Aardman Studios has taken the art of claymation animation to the next level, showcasing incredible detail and craftsmanship in their creations. Perhaps the younger generation has not even seen anything like this and is accustomed to the soulless computer approach. This will be a real discovery for children.

It’s simple here incredible detail! The amount of animated detail on the table just looks amazing. This is probably the most memorable and elaborate claymation world we’ve ever seen on screen.

In addition, this time the creators bought the smallest box of clay out of all two shades and made the color palette of the film much brighter than in the original story. The sequel turned out to be much more colorful and “sunny”.

On the one hand, this looks logical, because at the beginning of the story the heroes lived on a paradise green island. On the other hand, unfortunately, the authors did not change the tone of the story (in the truest sense of the word) when the heroes found themselves in a much darker and more dangerous place.

It would be an interesting transition and return to the beginning, when the chickens were practically in a WWII style concentration camp. This was a tense jump scare in the first Prison Break. But there is a script explanation for this.

The story has become simpler and no longer frightening, which is a pity

The new poultry farm looks like a crazy paradise for the chicken, rather than the final destination of life. Although during the narration they explain to us why the prison now looks so humane and funny, but, I repeat, this still deprives the tension of the story and some of the emotions when watching.

The story doesn’t feel as dramatic and there’s no real sense of danger for the characters. In the sequel lacks tension and drama, especially considering the original. And this is the only negative of the entire film.

If earlier the story of the escape resembled a rescue from a gloomy war zone, then the continuation is a direct homage to the spectacular “Mission: Impossible”. The text of one of the characters even speaks about this.

Adequate light entertainment for children is to be expected here, but adult audiences may be disappointed by the lack of tension and suspense. get bored when viewing.

Unlike the original Prison Break, which was received as a witty, action-packed animation, the sequel feels lighter, but still just as inventive and funny. But, I repeat, not so frightening and simpler.

Characters about whom almost nothing is said

Perhaps the reason was the lack of a truly strong antagonist. The main crime appears only at the 51st minute of the story! The heroes fight more with the prison security system than with a living opponent.

It should be noted that the brief retelling of old events at the beginning of the film is not enough to develop the characters’ personalities.

Perhaps the authors considered that the viewer would first get acquainted with the original before viewing. Thus, it will be better to understand the cunning, courage, audacity and ingenuity of every visible face, excuse me, chicken on the screen.

The conclusion is simple: look into the New Year

The cartoon will delight you with its volume:

• the same unique and varied humor is here: from light, adventurous and playful to deeper and sarcastic

• see here, as in the original story, children can reveal the idea of true friendship, courage and ingenuity, touch on the theme of freedom and the importance of family ties.

• there are quite a lot of references to popular culture here, which will undoubtedly make adults smile

“Chicken Run 2” is a worthy successor to the first part and is a must-see for the whole family. Perhaps the story turned out to be simpler and does not raise complex social issues, but it remains, if possible, a sincere cartoon. We recommend.
