Russian operators are switching to a new way of exchanging traffic with Google, writes RBC.
Operators connect directly to Google’s network, gradually increasing the number of direct connections to expand traffic capacity. This was confirmed by Rostelecom, Transtelecom, as well as one of the Big Three operators. A Rostelecom representative added that they are expanding Google’s network technology network “as it sees a need.”
Previously, to develop its services, Google used its own Global Cache server, which was installed on the networks of Russian operators. When one of the users downloaded some content, it was stored on a server in Russia. When a second request was made from another subscriber, this content was downloaded not from Europe, but from a Russian server.
Since February 2022, the company has reduced the supply of servers to Russia, which led to a gradual cessation of construction.
The new method of delivering traffic should remain at the same speed of Google services in Russia, but experts are not sure that the company will cope with the large volume of new direct routes. [РБК]
