Russian operators are increasing the number of direct connections to Google since the company stopped supplying Global Cache servers to the Russian Federation in 2022, and existing ones are slowly running out.

Russian operators are switching to a new format for exchanging traffic with Google

As Rostelecom told RBC, the company is expanding its existing connections with Google networks “as the need arises.” Transtelecom also confirmed that they are expanding the unions. A source from one of the big three operators also reported similar actions due to the wear and tear of Google Global Cache servers.

The American corporation used these servers for fast and efficient delivery of content, including YouTube. In 2022, as part of the sanctions, Google stopped supplying this equipment to Russia.

At the same time, traffic in the country is growing naturally, which requires optimization and expansion of infrastructure.

Rostelecom clarified that in current conditions, the modernization of connections in Moscow is the only opportunity to ensure high-quality communications and at the same time increase traffic. However, this is not a new measure; These types of solutions have been used before, the company added.

Several market participants reported that Google’s letter warns that it will stop sending traffic through routing servers at exchange points starting in January 2024.

“We found that today we rely on routing servers to exchange traffic with your network in some IXPs. Once we stop supporting the route server, this traffic will change. To minimize the impact, we would like to invite you to connect directly to Google as soon as possible,” the company said in the notice.

Piter-IX CEO Nikolai Metlyuk explained that Google warns about a change in the traffic transmission format. Now it will go directly, instead of through routing servers.

As the expert clarified, the company can thus reduce the cost of paying for traffic at exchange points. If the operator does not have a direct connection to Google, you will simply have to change the router settings, Metlyuk concluded.
